Hallux valgus (curvature of the thumb): symptoms, causes, treatment

This article will focus on a topic that is literally ill, a disease that occurs in every 3 inhabitants of the planet.

hallux valgus

This disease, like any villain, has several aliases:

  • hallux valgus;
  • curvature of the thumb;
  • bone growth in the leg;
  • bursitis;
  • hallux valgus, etc.

Since this is a foot disease, it brings a lot of discomfort. When a bone grows in the foot, it is difficult to stand for a long time due to pain, it is especially difficult to choose shoes that do not squeeze or press on the toes.

Almost every one of us, if we do not face a curvature of the thumb, we saw it in the relatives. This disease does not have a general pattern, does not respond well to therapy, and is sometimes not treated at all.

Hallux valgus or bursitis are easy to detect. The symptoms are as follows: a small bump appears on the foot near the big toe, which increases rapidly in size, becoming a fairly bulky growth. The toes seem to drop to the side, although not only does the curve of the foot bend, but the anatomical arches break as well.

If you find a bone actively growing near the big toe, first determine its color; this will help you figure out what the problem is. The diagnosis is best made in the morning, as soon as you wake up.

If the bone is skin color and does not have any specific color or shade, this may indicate that it has one of the types of flat feet.

If the bone is red, this indicates inflammatory processes. This reddened bone is called bursitis. Bursitis is an inflammatory condition characterized by fluid buildup. This inflammation is preceded by bruises, abrasions, etc. The trauma may even be old and the inflammation has only started now. Another cause of bursitis is an infectious disease.

If you notice that the bone is red in the morning (that is, this is not a consequence of rubbing your foot with shoes), you should consult a doctor. Bursitis can only be treated with medications, that is, with pills, ointments against inflammation, etc.

Causes of hallux valgus

Genetic predisposition. If you have noticed a curvature of the thumb in some of your relatives, it is most likely genetically transmitted.

Shoes. One of the main causes of a crooked toe is wearing the wrong shoes. This problem is of great concern to girls and women who have to walk a lot in high heels. This excitement is justified: orthopedists recommend wearing square heels of up to 4 cm, and only that. All of the above already hurts the foot, especially the stilettos, because all the load when walking falls on the metatarsal of the foot.

If you have already succumbed to the influence of fashion in high heels, there is a way out: you should use special inserts that make walking easier, while avoiding slipping.

Flat feet. Not everyone knows that flat feet exist of 2 types: longitudinal and transverse.

Longitudinalis a classic type of flatfoot, known to all. It is easily recognizable by its lack of curvature and the absolutely flat surface of the foot. It is with these flat feet that they are not taken into the army.

Transverseis the type of flat foot that is directly related to the curvature of the foot in the form of hallux valgus. A characteristic feature of this type of flat feet is the presence of corns and calluses, mainly in the metatarsal area. The ideal foot should have a curve under the big toe, this curve will show the presence or absence of transverse flat feet. As the arches of the foot do not work with the transverse flat feet, respectively, the toes will move, they will deform. On the right foot, the toes will drift to the right and left to the left. With advanced hallux valgus, the thumb is crossed with the middle one.

Since hallux valgus is primarily a consequence of transverse flat feet, treatment methods will address this same reason.

For information: none of the types of flat feet are treated. To help patients: only special insoles and orthopedic inserts that prevent the development of the disease.

Deformation should be treated in an integrated way. The use of a single method will not bring any results, or will wait for you for a long time. Treatment or correction of a large bone, depending on the stage of neglect, takes from one month to 4 months.

What is the complex for the fight against hallux valgus?

Use of orthopedic insoles

They will help ease the load, but will also properly align the arches of the foot and give it the correct shape. Orthopedic insoles must contain an instep support and a metatarsal roller (a pad under the transverse arch). This is a small inverted drop-shaped insert that is placed under the thumb. It is she who lifts the transverse arch, while the fingers separate and take the correct position.

There is also a variety of medical silicone orthopedic devices. For example, interdigital inserts that help to adjust and extend the fingers. There are also special bandages designed to align the thumb. But they are too big and cannot be used with most shoes. Therefore, they are worn at night.

The right shoes

It is necessary to control the heel height: up to 4 cm. Correctly selected footwear helps prevent further foot problems.

Surgical treatment

If the hallux valgus process is severely neglected, i. e. the foot has curled, the thumb is above the middle, the case cannot be avoided with valgus bandages or inserts. This will require surgery and the work of a surgeon.

Hallux valgusis a problem that must be noticed in time and dealt with, then no more problems will arise. With some regularity and responsibility, you will definitely beat this disease.
